Interesting...

SO yes, alot of my issues do seem to center around FAS.
But along with dealing with a great deal of autism/aspergers research for the kids, Im beginning to see that I score ridiculously high on some aspergers criteria as well. Particularly when it comes to not relating well to people, having trouble understanding social cues, and being very stuck in routines to survive.

Oh, and not generally thinking like other people. Or more to the point, being *convinced* that the way I think is superior to the way others think. To the point where Im wondering if my "Sociopathic" tendencies are all just basically aspergers, wrapped in FAS.

Scary, that the combo of those may explain everything Ive fought socially my whole life. Relief though, that maybe Im not as "crazy" as I sometimes think I am.

Also - wondering how many other people out there, particularly of my generation, may be suffering from stuff like this, and just - not know.
And how many more have simply developed "coping mechanisms" to cover up or hide thier issues from others, and just - ignore themselves entirely.

At least, if I have...
*sighs*
Its like Ive finally figured out that its ok to be me. THat the things that I think and feel arent just - random stupidity, but have - a source.
And that source, is actually - legitimate.
And the friends that Ive lost over the years, I feel sorry for them now. Particularly those who should have had the knowledge to help me, and couldnt, or didnt.

And I thank God for the research in the last few years, that has come to surface, and has allowed me to finally, be free.

Or, you know - I could just be stark raving bonkers too - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/10154775.stm

New THought....

and maybe a new favorate... hmm what to call these...
It kinda goes along with my "we reward ourselves by killing ourselves" idea....

You have a child that you love and want to protect.
The child grows up, and you set in place a "reasonable" curfew. Lets say, 10 on school nights, and 1AM on weekends.
In my mind, thats fairly lenient. Or it was, untill a picture of reality hit me and I realized exactly how insane the basic logic behind that thought is so amazingly flawed, it isnt even funny.

Most crimes, most abductions, most muggings, rapes, accidents....
Happen on the weekend.

When we happily let our children stay out later and later. No worries.

Weeknights, are relitively quiet and calm.
This is when we tell our children that they must be home early. Or else.
we wouldnt want anything *bad* to happen to them on the way home from soccer practice on a wednesday night, now would we?
But leaving the rock concert with a bunch of thier friends at 2AM on a friday is perfectly safe.

Does this make sense to you?

My children will hate me, but I am extraordinarily tempted to tell Eva and Jade, that on weeknights, thier curfew is midnight.
on Weekends, its 8PM.
deal with it.

of course, the truth is, I wont most likely ever give my kids a curfew.
Unless they stop going to school, or are routinely late for it, they can stay up as late as they would like
and as long as I know where they are, they can go pretty much wherever they like

Because the reason why there is less crime on weeknights, is because no one manages long, running wild hours. Particularly not teenagers who need a lot of sleep. And still holding things together for school and work.

Weekends we go a bit wild, because there *is* no such barrier to our supposed fun.
and if that were any different, then of course - it would be more dangerous on weeknights. but, this *is* the way the world is, and so
I say - school nights, let them out late.
Weekends, have thier asses "and any friends they want to have in lockdown with them" in the house, or at least on the property within sight, by 9PM.

Yes your child will hate you for it.
But you would hate to see tier brians smushed out all over the roadside too, wouldnt you?

More Progress!

Shes nodding her head!

Coming down the stairs today, and shes got her usual armful of stuff - her beekah, her dinosaur, her piglets, her lamb, her cup.... and shes starting to whimper, because its pretty hard to get down the stairs when what you have in your arms weighs more then you do.
I turn to her and ask if I can help her, and she *nods*...
How sad is it that I choked up as I took some of the toys from her so she could finish.

Then, we get to the bottom, and she really starts fussing, so I do my usual sweep of the room to see what might be bothering her, and see her brother firmly planted with his puppy in front of the chair she usually puts her things on, so I ask her - is your brother in the way? And what do you know, I get *another*nod* glory hallelujah my daughter is finally figureing out how to communicate with me!!!!

Between that, and being told a short (less then a page) that I wrote was "the best they had ever read"
My morning is going remarkably well!
yay!

Here she goes again......

1 Corinthians 13.4 - 8

4
Love is patient - To other drivers, to people behind tills. To the impatient woman in the front of the line, to the jerk with the angry dog. To your children who are asking for the same movie, for the 20th, or 200th time. To the family member who irritates you no matter what they say, and to the co-worker who thinks they can get away with murder.

love is kind. - To the disenfranchised and to the privledged, to the intelligent and the stupid alike. To the obese, the disabled, to the anorexics and to the cutters. Because there - but for the Grace of God, go us all...

It does not envy, - Because it has no reason to want. Love is aware that as long as basic needs are met, there is nothingelse needed. Love, is Wise. Love, thinks, even when others dont.

it does not boast, - Because Love knows that there is nothing that it can do, that someone cant do better. Love is aware.

it is not proud. - Love has nothing to be proud of. It washes feet, it cleans up after people. Itserves without shame, because only the greatest of us have the privledge of *serving*.

5It is not rude, - Love always wants others to have a good day. Even if it doesnt always *like* them. Love recognizes that thier smile may be the only nice thing that happens to a person in a day.

it is not self-seeking, - Love knows that the greatest feeling in the world truely comes from helping others, and that there is always time for yourself - later.

it is not easily angered,- What point is there in getting angry? You cannot change what has happened, all you can do is move on. Bitterness and grudge holding only damage the person holding them.

it keeps no record of wrongs. - Why bring up the past? Every moment of your life is another moment to start over new.

6Love does not delight in evil - If I have to explain this.. oh I forgot, I really do. Evil is anything that hurts another person. *Anything*. Or perhaps, what I have to explain, is "not delighting" in it. This means, not only do aviod *doing* the evil yourself, but you make sure that your reaction to what others do - *doesnt*hurt* them* either. Cry for them, pray for them, but dont throw it back at them.

but rejoices with the truth. - The Truth really does set people free. But its not your job to throw that in a persons face either. Just be happy when you see it.

7
It always protects, - Everything around you is a sacred trust. If you are not evious, and do not boast, then you know that none of it is really yours, to begin with. So you protect the people, even the ones you dont like. You protect the earth, because it is our home. You protect animals, because God asks us too. But - remember, nothing is yours... its just in your trust. If someone comes to take it from you - then you give it. Youve lost nothing.

always trusts, - Love is wise, not stupid. I trust people, and things, as far as they will let me. But trusting dental floss as rope, is stupid. God gave us brains for a reason.

always hopes, - Hope does not negate action, but goes hand in hand with it. If Im hoping for a job, I go out and look for one. If Im hoping for a million dollers, I go out and find a way to work for it. God is not Santa Clause. I always hope though, that the people around me will see truth, and recognize it. But screaming at them as to what truth is?... well again lets not hit the stupid.

always perseveres. - Love doesnt really give up. It isnt a crush, that will fade. It isnt lust, that is selfish. It isnt a whim, that will pass. Love is an active choice you make every morning. You get up after a crappy nights sleep because the body next to you snored load enough to wake people in Seattle, and you *choose* to love the mook anyways. The child that wakes screaming every morning - you cuddle untill they quiet - every morning, because you *choose* to. And the more often you choose it, the deeper and more real it becomes. Love however, is never perfect - because its a continuing practice, not something we can conquer.

8Love never fails. - Because it isnt based on anything here. Its not based on a mood, on an object, or on a person. Love - may not always be understood, may be displayed in countless fashions. But it never fails, when its *there* - and that, is an individual choice.

God is Love. And in the end, all God asks is that we love Him, and the people we encounter, every day.
He doesnt ask that we agree with them, like them, or even respect them. He doesnt ask that they behave to our own personal code of conduct. He simply asks that we love them. Unconditionally, unexceptionally.
And if you cant do that...
If you cannot show love to - the liberals, the democrats, the communists, the hippies, the gays, the straights, the ugly and the beautiful, the young, the old, the intelligent, and the stupid...

Then you do not know God.
And sadly - He doesnt know you either.

So, I suppose, its time to talk about this....

*sighs*
Three working topic in my mind - two semi requested, and one - new.
1) Autism as Evolution.
2) Accepting Autism
3) FAS and learning to believe.

Autism as Evolution.
In the global wake of the baby boom, population is slipping, dropping at fantastic levels... bringing about all the adherent issues. Economy in decline, War a slightly less popular option, people pickier about thier mates and when they mate.
And we see a rise in - autism?
To me, it makes sense - in a post modern world.

The human mind was never meant to handle the amount of information we have thrown at us, the massive complex thing that is life. Multi-tasking is no longer the exception - its the rule, you have to be able to do more then one thing at once, or you wont get a job, never mind hold a job.

And now, we are seeing a huge plethora of children being born who simply *cant* function in a society that is loud, obnoxios, and overwhelming to the senses. All the things that cause us to have "mild issues" now and then, are thrust aside in the light of a child who wants a quiet, still enviroment - something peaceful and still.

Perhaps this is what will save our species from drowning in absolute stupid.

Think about it. These people dont like the fast motion of vehicles. THey dont multi-task at work, but are very happy at one simple task. They dont get tired of it, they find joy, in the simplistic.
They dont like the loud, perferring quiet and peaceful. WEll suited to basic survival traits - like... farming. Like simple construction.

They are easily overjoyed, by small things - and react - to us - in radical fashion, to the smallest things. But what I see is a child who reacts appropriately to something we have grown jaded and bored to.
Maybe the world needs them now. TO remind us.
The lives we lead today? Are miserable, hungry, life sapping wrecks.
THere is an easier way.

Accepting Autism.
My child, did not change when the Dr. looked me in the eye, and said "Akiva has autism" She did not suddeny "have" something wrong with her. The child that walked into that office was the same as the child who walked out of it.
The only thing that changed, was the battle plan.
No - lets go with the map
I like the map analogy.

You see - every child born in this time and place, comes with a pretty standard road map.
The pre-school, the first crush, the kindergarten, the first *real crush, elementary school and the endless round of pointless "graduation" they have these days.
Swimming lessons, dance lessons and jr high
heart break, back stabbing and "you dont understand!"
sr high and the crush of realization that a war is almost at the end, and you have to finally define yourself. Graduation and Commencement and sex and jobs and OMG - being an adult sucks...

We know this road - weve been down it.
And now... all of a sudden, with one word - that map no longer is there. And instead, you are handed another. A more - scenic route, a slower route. One with a lot of unexpected stops and detours.

Now, you have two choices.
Ever been to Oregon?

Oregon has two main highways. One is the I5. The I5 cuts in an almost straight line through the middle of the state. Mostly, through cattle country. Its easily the most boring highway I have ever been on. The second one, is the scenic route. This road winds along the coast. It probably takes 2 or even 3 times longer to drive. You see huge caverns filled with bats, the redwoods, the pacific ocean crashing along sandy beaches. You see quiant little blink if you miss them towns with mom and pop hamburger joints where they actually know how to cook, and little old ladies out walking thier dogs wearing umbrella hats and waving at every car that goes by.

Sometimes, you really wish you were on that fast track. The gas stations dont come at regular, predictable interveles, the road isnt always in the best condition, and its narrow and windy... ill lit at night.

But, its beautiful. It reminds you of the beautiful things in life. IT reminds you that God is an amazing creator, whos artwork is unparralleled in this world.

I think in the end, you might even feel sorry for the people who have to take that fast and easy route. They missed out on so many things. Things that you got to sit back, and enjoy.

So, when the road suddenly washes out from your feet, and your faced with that terrifying moment. The map you were given is taken away from you, and instead, you get this *other* thing....
You can choose like the people do in victoria at rush hour.
Either you sit in your car and freak out that your going to be late.

Or you crank the tunes, pop the top of a cold can of coke, get out of the car, and visit with your new "neighbors" untill traffic starts moving agin.

Its intirely up to you. Every. Single. Day.

OK... its been a while

I think we have a pre-school for Eva, and on monday we have our first assesment for home care workers. So things are crawling along.

Eva though, has taken a few very big steps, since the last time I posted. I got her up from her nap one day, to discover her fully dressed in clothes she wasnt wearing when I put in her in there. That means that she - 1) Got her closet open. 2) Picked out clothes on her own. 3) Took off her shirt. 4) Put on - socks, pants, and shirt, all properly. 5) Closed the closet and drawers back up.

I was insanely happy.

She topped it when we got her Princess and the Frog, her new faverate movie. Every single time TIana comes out with the blue dress on, she runs over and tells me "Princess". Naveen turns up as the frog, and she comes over and tells me "Frog". And of course, when they torture that poor little kitty, she comes over and tells me "Kitty". New on that list, is the Shadow Demons. She *used* to say "puppy" there, but weve taught her the word "Demon" and she now calls them that.
So - she actually "including" us in something she enjoys, which is massive on the socialization scale.

Speaking of words....
Jade has learned a new one.

The weather is nice enough for them to play outside again, and everytime ur neighbor lets her dogs out, Eva comes in and points outside, saying "up" (again, another *huge* step forward) Shes indicating that she wants us to lift her up so she can see the puppies over the fence.
So of course, we indulge that, then Jade wants up, so we lift him up too.

Well the first time we did this, after I put him down, he was standing on his little blue seated "bike" thingy.... and I was chatting with the neighbor.

Her - "Little boy, I dont think you should be standing on that - its not safe"
Jade - "Oh Fuck"
cue hysterical laughter
Daddy comes to the door
Jade walks over, looking - well, a bit confused...
Daddy - "what did you say?"
Jade "oh shit"
cue more hysterical laughter.

of course, since then, he has done a repeat performance, and gotten soap on the tongue for it. Just a drop of liquid, but hopefully, hes learned his lesson.
As amusing as it is to see that insanely angelic face.... yeah.

and my final story for the day...
mama woke up with a very upset tummy. Not too sure what I ate, but oh my goodness did I ever feel like Riply from Aliens... (no Jan, not the puppy)
SO I put on yes, Princess and the Frog - again....and curled up on the couch in pain.

Within a few minutes, Eva comes over and puts her little "Beekaa" over me... her own little pink blanket that she loves. And momma wipes a tear away because - yeah.
Well, smart child that she is, she realizes quickly that mommas a bit big for the beekah. (Yeah, thats a better spelling for that word) So she goes over to where I have my big purple throw, and pulls it over, and then actually tucks me in, complete with making sure my feet are covered, and giving me a kiss.

Then, she crawls up, sits up where my head is (Ive got my hood up on my bathrobe) and she tugs my head onto her lap.
So momma, big tough bitch she is, sits there crying for about 10 minutes...

Tell me - what did I ever do - to deserve a child like that?
